Convenient and Easy to Use
I bought the Vector MAXX 400 watt inverter because it was about the highest wattage inverter available that still plugged into the cigarette lighter and I am not displeased. The unit comes with both a cigarette lighter cord and alligator clips which can be attached directly to the battery. These are color coded and connected to the unit by the user. I just leave the cigarette lighter cord attached as it still fits in the convenient hard-shell carrying case in that configuration. The unit has audio alarm for low power, a circuit breaker, and a fan which is not too loud.

I found it easy to use – just hook up the cables, plug it in and run my stuff. I mostly use this to power a laptop running navigation software or recharge a cell phone and it works great. (I probably do not need this much power for these tasks but you never know when you will need the extra juice for other usage.) It powered the laptop on a 12 hour drive from Chicago to D.C. with no problems. I do use a surge suppressor for the laptop but that is just me and to the best of my knowledge, the Vector MAXX has never triggered the surge suppressor.

My only (mild) complaint is that the cords are a little short. Overall, I find it easy to use and pretty handy to have around. I recommend it.

400 Watt Invertor
This invertor works very well. It replaced a burned out invertor I have on a mobile emergency cart-based power backup. I live in the Sierra foothills where PG&E power outages are more frequent than normal. The cart has a 12v deep-cycle battery and two 400 watt invertors mounted on it. It easily runs a couple of CFL lamps and a fan for several hours.

I have a 5000 watt gas generator, but that is too much work for short duration outages and the mobile cart fills the need just fine without all the noise.

Very good product
I used to run a freezer in the back of my pickup when I went elk hunting. It ran for 4 days – all the way from Colorodo to Virginia.

Excellent Inverter, True surge capacity
I bought this inverter after researching several different models. My house is fairly rural, and I lose power a half-dozen times a year. About 2 of these outages last more than a day, so clearly this won’t help with that, as I don’t have a dozen deep cycle batteries lying around.

This model has incredible starting capacity, and I purchased this model because I wanted one that could start and run my fridge from a battery so I don’t lose a few hundred dollars in food every time the power goes out. The manual states that this model can provide 2x rated power (1600 w in this case) for a FULL 10 SECONDS. That is incredible and unheard of in an inverter this price. If you download the manuals for most, they state they can provide 2x rated power, but for only 0.1 second. 0.1 second? That’s hardly helpful, and won’t start any motor. I can confirm that this unit will easily start and run both of my refrigerators without any difficulty. Obviously the surge capacity is reduced with the batteries reduced power capacity, and it won’t surge 2x when the battery is low. Additionally, I was impressed with the manual recommending “just try it”, if you didn’t know if the inverter could handle your load. That indicates they trust their design, and gives me confidence as well.

Just today I used this inverter with a trolling motor battery from my boat. I was able to watch TV and operate a lamp with a CFL bulb for about 5 hours until power came back on. This includes my 57″ CRT projection TV, 700w amp and DirecTiVo. My Kill-A-Watt EZ indicates that it pulls about 350w idle. It ran from this inverter for 5 hours without any difficulty, and only became warm to the touch. The power output is cleaner than my borrowed generator; the TV picture was rock solid, no audio artifacts through the amp.

Caveats:
1) When the battery runs down, the surge capacity is reduced. It still had an hour of TV left, but it would no longer start the fridge.
2) The power is not clean enough to satisfy the APC UPS on my TiVo. It ran the battery down on the UPS since it was convinced my power was dirty. Moving the power to the inverter directly solved this problem.
3) This unit pulls a LOT of current when running. Tonight one of the nuts on the battery post was loose, and the inverter kept shutting down. Once I realized the problem, I tightened the nut and all was well. The loose nut could not provide the current needed to run the Inverter. Mess with the battery clamps, and it will give you a big spark, pretty bright if your power is out.

Pretty good, some minor flaws (failed after 3 years)

We’ve had this microwave for a couple of months now, so I can’t comment on its long-term reliability.

Good:

Mostly, it’s been fine. It meets my primary requirement for a microwave, which is that you can put food into it, press 3 0 START, and it cooks for 30 seconds at full power. (It’s amazing how many microwaves fail that test, requiring some other key before the time. Easy enough if you know how to use it, but not for visitors.)

It can do relatively complex sequences like:
- Wait 5 minutes (to line up completion time with other foods)
- Cook 4 minutes
- Wait 20 seconds (to give me time to stir)
- Cook 3 minutes
- Wait 2 minutes (post-cook “let stand” time)

It’ll prompt you through most operations, though … the … prompting … is … kind … of … tedious.

The Sensor Reheat feature seems to do a pretty good job of warming food up to a good serving temperature. It overwarms frozen corn dogs a little, but only a little.

I haven’t used it much, but the Sensor Cook feature did a good job on baked potatoes.

Complaints:

It’s going to sound picky, but my biggest complaint with this microwave is that its beeper isn’t loud enough. It’s a little chirp-chirp that you could easily miss if you’re in the next room. It does repeat the chirp every few minutes until you open the door.

The child lock is too hard to use. My other child-lockable appliances have a button with a lock icon on it; if you hold the button for about 5 seconds it locks or unlocks the device. For this one, though, the sequence is Function, 5, 1 to lock and Function, 5, 2 to unlock. (I had to go check.) Too hard to remember, and if you don’t know that it starts with “Function” you’re just hosed.

Nits:

There are a few features I don’t use yet (and so at the moment they represent unnecessary complexity) – Popcorn, More/Less. “Quick Minute” doesn’t seem like enough of a win to be worth a dedicated button – 1 0 0 START vs QM START? 6 0 START if you optimize a bit means QM only cuts out one keystroke. If you need three minutes, QM QM QM START is the same as 3 0 0 START.

I’d like a “hard pause” feature, where it would stop a cook sequence and beep, and then resume the cook sequence when I press “Start” after I stir the food.

Good cooker, but irritating
I bought this 6 months ago to replace a ten-year-old GE 1000W microwave. I have it installed in the same cabinet opening as the old GE, but with a different third party grillwork.

Plusses:

The oven cavity is gigantic.

It has lots more functions than I have used and probably more than I will ever use. I bought it for the size and color.

It boils water and cooks/heats thing substantially faster than my old GE. The defrost seems to be more even, but this is not a major change from my old GE.

Minuses:

The timer/done beeper is not loud enough. If I have the stove exhaust fan running on low, I cannot hear the beeper unless I am listening intently for it. If nothing is running in the kitchen, I can hear it at a much lower volume level than the old GE. The beeper does NOT repeat with reminders unless you turn the option on in the functions menu.

This microwave is electronically noisy. It kills my wireless WIFI connection whereas the old GE barely slowed it down. It also causes a noticable garbling of cordless phone calls. Again the GE did not do this. I don’t know if the GE was abnormally good or if the Panasonic is abnormally bad, but the transition was downhill.

If I try to do anything complicated, the microwave prompts me through it with scrolling pormpts on a display that is too small for the purpose. The information is there, but it is a slow process. I would have prefered more info on the decal inside the oven so I didn’t have to wait while things scroll by 6 letters at a time. The fact — that there is help — is good.

The exterior of the oven door is a high-gloss, soft plastic. The softness makes it easy to get small scratches on it. The high-gloss makes it easy to see them.

ENJOY YOUR MEAL

Poor reliability
I own the predecessor to this model, the H964. It’s the 2nd Panansonic microwave of this size that we’ve bought–in just 3 years. The first lasted 1 1/2 years and had to be repaired once. The second died three weeks after the warranty period. After literally 8 calls to Panasonic customer service (asking for the serial number, calling back with it, etc etc.) they agreed to at least cover the cost of a repair estimate (they eventually paid for the entire repair cost).

The problem was that the fuse had died. The authorized repair facilitiy told me that the only microwaves they ever get for repair are Panasonics; he said the problem is that to reduce their weight, they use smaller parts, like the tubes, which can’t handle the load for long. He also said that their fuses don’t last.

The repair person recommended either Sharp or Sanyo as much longer lasting. I checked the weight of a similar-sized Sharp and saw that it weighed about 6 pounds more than the Panasonic–presumably because some parts are heftier.

When this newly-repaired Panasonic dies again, it will be long out of warranty and then we’ll try our luck with a Sharp. Replacing a microwave every 18-20 months is not my idea of money well spent.

Disappointing. Would not recommend.
After several years of fantastic service, our GE microwave caught fire. (Upon further research we found we were lucky it had not done so sooner, but it cooked to perfection while it worked.) I read reviews for the Panasonic NN-H965WF 2.2 cu. ft. microwave and decided to purchase it. I was really looking forward to having a large oven. However, I have been very disappointed in its performance. First, it takes much longer to cook foods,or even heat water, for that matter, than any other microwave we have owned. Also, the auto popcorn setting either undercooks or burns the popcorn. The auto sensor cooking does a poor job. In short, I have used cheap microwaves of much less power in offices and other places that out perform this machine. Also, placing the glass plate correctly in position can take a bit of time. By “time” I mean seconds, but much longer than I have ever experienced with other machines and when one is trying to cook in a hurry, having to fuss with the plate is irritating. And speaking of time, the clock and other readings are not very clear. The background with the unlit portions of the digital read-out shows so brightly that there is not much contrast between it and the lit numbers. In short, I wish I had purchased a different microwave and would not recommend this one to a perspective buyer.

If you must buy this, you must also buy a 2 year replacement plan.
Purchased August 20, 2006. Failed within 19 months (March 2008). It makes an electrical arcing sound (similar to a Jacob’s Ladder, often seen in cheesy Sci-Fi flicks) and emits a burning smell from an unknown source, and shuts itself off before even 10 seconds pass of cooking on high. No foreign metal has been placed inside, instructions have been followed to the letter, and very little shaking has been done to it.

Putting the sensor reheat/sensor cook (a must) together with the good reviews at the time, I bought it.

Unfortunately it seems not enough work was put into solidifying the electrical system, due to what essentially was a fire in my case, and I suspect exactly the same for reviewer VLG “VLG” (Enid, OK).

Due to my experience, VLG’s review (fire), John H. Stoufer’s review (died), and Deb’s comment on said review (2 in less than 3 years), I would advise AGAINST purchasing this model, as all units seem built to fail within 2 years.

LOVE THIS MICROWAVE!!!!!!
I did quite a lot of research before purchasing a new microwave. I knew what I wanted as far as wattage, size, etc. I’ve had this one for ten months now and I still love it! Very spacious for large dishes, defrosts better than any I’ve had(doesn’t “cook” the food). Haven’t had one single problem. Would definitely recommend this item!

Expanded dynamic range
The new Super CCD SR was developed specifically to deliver wider dynamic range than ever before possible. The styling of the FinePix F700 takes its cue from the clean layout of film-based compact cameras. The metal-clad body features a symmetrical layout with the lens and LCD screen at the center of the front and back respectively – the LCD is positioned directly behind the lens, aligned on the same plane, eliminating discrepancies in the image. And this centrally positioned lens and LCD produce ideal ergonomics for holding and operating the camera.

High performance 6.65 zooming
The FinePix F700 features a fast and responsive f/2.8 Super EBC Fujinon 35 optical zoom lens that is equivalent to 35-105mm on a 35mm camera. By designing the lens specifically for the sensor of the FinePix F700, Fujifilm’s engineers were able to ensure outstanding pictorial results from wide angle to telephoto. Combined with smooth digital zooming up to 2.25 (in 1280 ´ 960-pixel mode), the camera can effectively magnify images up to approximately 6.65 (224mm equivalent).

Comprehensive user controls
Photo Mode Button: An entirely new concept in digital camera operation, this button gives you control over all image quality parameters, including sensitivity (AUTO or MANUAL: ISO equivalent 200, 400, 800, and 1600), and color (Standard, Chrome, and B&W). The Chrome color setting, for example, slightly boosts contrast and saturation for a look that resembles color slide film. When reviewing images, this control can also be used to set DPOF for printing.
Continuous Shooting Select Button: Lets you choose instantly among three continuous shooting modes: “Top-5 Frame” (5 frames/second for one second when shutter button is pressed), “Final-5 Frame” (5 frames/second for one second just before shutter button is released*), and “Long- Period Continuous Shooting”. Long-Period Continuous Shooting is available only in Auto Programmed mode and forces the resolution to 1280 x 960 pixels, but allows you to capture up to 40 frames at a continuous 1.8 frames/second.
Continuous AF Button: Simply hold your finger on this button to keep a moving subject in continuous focus. Whatever the mode, the auto focus system of the FinePix F700 offers quicker and more accurate focusing in any situation, including low light. The camera also lets you focus on specific areas in the viewfinder using the AF Area Focus mechanism, without having to lock and recompose the shot.

Versatile exposure options
The FinePix F700 provides six different ways to get the exposure you want: Auto mode for the ultimate in ease, plus Programmed AE, Aperture-Priority AE (a range of 13 f-steps, from F2.8 to F8), Shutter Speed-Priority AE (1/1000 to 3 seconds), Manual, and Scene Position modes. The latter gives you instant access to four special preset program modes: Portrait, Landscape, Sports, and Night Scene.
To handle the widest possible variety of light conditions, the FinePix F700 also provides three light metering choices: 64-TTL Multi, Spot, and Average. Like a 35mm camera, the FinePix F700 has an exposure compensation button on the back of camera. This button allows you to easily correct exposure from –2 to +2 EV in 1/3-EV increments.

Ultra-sophisticated Auto White Balance
The Super Intelligent Auto White Balance of the FinePix F700 precisely detects and evaluates lighting conditions on your subjects, even in situations with several different light sources including flash, to deliver highly accurate, natural colors.

Traditionally, digital cameras with powerful zoom lenses have been restricted to the middle and upper end of the market, but with the introduction of the FinePix 2800, Fuji has brought serious zoom power to an affordable, simple point-and-shoot.

Optics and Resolution
The impressive autofocus lens on the 2800 zooms a full 6x–from 38mm to 228mm. In addition, digital zoom of up to 2.5x is available, depending upon the image quality setting. If you’re taking pictures at the highest resolution, digital zoom is disabled to preserve image quality, but if you’re shooting at a lower resolution, then you’ll be able to use some digital zoom, too.

The 2800′s 2-megapixel sensor captures enough detail for sharp prints at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. For most amateur photographers, 2 megapixels is a great balance between image quality and cost. Some photographers prefer higher-resolution sensors so they can crop away unwanted parts at the edges of their photos. Of course, these unwanted edges are often the result of a lens that can’t zoom in far enough, a situation that’s less likely to come up when you’re using the 2800. If 2 megapixels isn’t enough detail for you, the next higher-resolution camera that still has a long-zoom lens is the Minolta DiMAGE 5.

To compose your images, either use the 1.8-inch LCD display or the electronic viewfinder (EVF). An EVF looks like a traditional viewfinder, but when you put your eye up to it, you’ll find that you’re actually looking at a miniature LCD display. This is the same arrangement used by many camcorders, and it has its pluses and minuses compared to a traditional viewfinder. The benefit is that you get to see all the extra information that’s normally displayed on the screen (battery condition, pictures remaining, any manual settings you’ve entered, etc). The problem is that EVFs aren’t very effective in low-light situations, which means you’ll be confronted with a view screen that’s completely black when shooting at night and in dimly lit rooms. With a little practice, you can learn to shoot quite effectively without the benefit of the LCD screen when this situation comes up–after taking the shot, you can review it on the screen to ensure you were pointing the camera in the right direction.

More Features
Like most of the entry-level models in Fuji’s lineup, the 2800 has relatively few advanced features, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you can adjust the white balance, exposure compensation, and flash mode. There’s also an audio-annotation feature that lets you record up to 30 seconds of audio along with each picture you take. In addition, the camera can be used as an Internet Webcam when tethered to your computer via the included USB cable.

The camera is made of plastic for light weight and affordability, and it feels reasonably solid and durable. The lens is protected by a lens cap that’s tethered to the camera so you won’t lose it. This solution isn’t quite as nifty as models with automatic or sliding lens covers, but it works just as well.

Power
The Finepix 2800 uses four AA batteries–a set of disposable alkaline batteries is included. The benefit to using standard AA batteries instead of a custom proprietary battery is that AA batteries are widely available, so missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot due to dead batteries won’t be an issue.

If you only use the camera several times a year, high-capacity lithium batteries are a logical idea, since they’ll hold their charge for years when sitting in an unused camera. If you use the camera more often, then the lithium batteries don’t make economic or environmental sense–we recommend getting a set or two of rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and a charger. A digital camera will kill a set of alkaline batteries extremely quickly, especially if you’re using the camera’s LCD display, so they aren’t recommended except in a pinch. To ensure you’ll always be ready for action, we recommend having two sets of rechargeables so you can always have one set in the camera and the other set in the charger.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the camera captures 320 x 240 video clips with audio for up to 60 seconds per clip. The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won’t replace your camcorder, but it’s perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on standard SmartMedia cards, and the included 16 MB card holds approximately 39 images at the camera’s default settings. SmartMedia cards are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 39 images per outing (on a vacation, for example), then you’ll want a bigger card. A 64 MB card is a great size for this camera, storing around 150 images. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.

Size
At 3.7 by 3.0 by 2.8 inches and 13 ounces, the 2800 is surprisingly compact. It’s a little thicker from front to back than some models, but this is a small price to pay for the extra zoom.
